Joan Myers, President, North Carolina Technology Association is Chair of CRITA’s Legislative Committee and actively continues to develop and focus CRITA’s legislative agenda.
NCTA has a long history of government involvement and is one which all organizations can look to for best practices in public policy. Both Joan and NCTA's Communications/Government Affairs Coordinator are registered North Carolina lobbyists. NCTA both "plays offense" (advocates for industry-promoting legislation) and "plays defense" (works hard to oppose industry-damaging bills). NCTA has built strong relationships with leaders in both the North Carolina House of Representatives and the North Carolina Senate, particularly with the leadership of the Information Technology committees in each chamber.
NCTA provides many Government Affairs services to their members. They keep a *detailed matrix of pertinent legislation which is emailed out to Government Affairs committee members on a regular basis and also post to their website. They also hold a series of Government Affairs events, including congressional briefings with members of North Carolina's US Congressional delegation, information sessions on key issues (such as UCITA - Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act), and events outlining "How to Engage Your Company in the Political Process." Each year, NCTA's Board of Directors adopts a Legislative Agenda, which allows NCTA's Government Affairs program to focus on key issues.
* Joan Myers has provided the legislative matrix to CRITA members so that pending individual State legislation can be shared. CRITA members are encouraged to submit their updated matrix on a regular basis. The matrix can be downloaded and reviewed in the Members Only portion of this website.
